Slow shutter speeds require a tripod to avoid camera shake. Experimentation is key...

Where is the reflector underneath her or the strip light?
Thanks for the product training, portrait, and Jewelry. Give me ideas. Thanks.
This video is really great at all levels, thank you for the amazing work!
Great!!!!
What lens would you recommend on a full frame camera?
This is good for growing company that may need it for a model.
This reminds me when I worked with some Agency and Freelance models in studio during events and personal work along time ago. This is a good video also for hobbyist and I can adapt some of it if needed at a studio or at home. Thanks.
I am glad these videos are available to keep you current if doing collaboration, hobby, contract work, or store owner or employee.
When your channel was called "Karl Taylor," I could easily remember your channel and recommend it to others. "Visual Education" is a name with no meaning. It could as easily be teaching quantum physics by visual means. If I pulled out my Sinar, loaded a sheet of Ektar 100, a photo of a rose could fill the 5x4 frame and so be a macro photograph. OTOH, the same photo made with my Lumix G9 would not. I think it's a stupid category. If I were a keen amateur photographer, i'd likely have my ideal camera, or one close enough. In 2018 I actually had a 5Ds, I chose it ahead of the 5D IV. A 5D IV would not be a useful prize. Nor would it be for someone using a Nikon D850. Today, the 5Ds is long gone, so too most of the lenses. In its place is the Lumix S1R with an adaptor so I can still use my TS-E lenses. Most of my photography is done with M43 cameras. Canon has nothing for me. What would be a useful prize to me? Perhaps a B&H gift voucher of sufficient value to by the soon-to-be announced R5 II, partly redeemable for cash in my currency. I would be free to buy anything at all, Nikon, Lumix bodies or lenses, put it towards a Phase One. But I'd get change if I didn't spend it all down to the last dollar. What I hoped to learn is this: I have a thousand photos. How do I choose the one or few most likely to catch the judgemental eye? BTW I am told my photography _is_ art. If my photography is art, I will jolly well do what I like to my photos. I am under no obligation to make my photos adhere to reality. Your competitions are clearly not for me.
Things change, evolve and move on. Our main platform for which this RUclips Channel is a promotional tool now accommodates many other genres such as CGI, Makeup, Post Production. Filmmaking, Art and Graphics soon too. Everything the platform teaches is to do with the 'Visual Arts' only, so Visual Education was the perfect name to move forward. The name Karl Taylor was not as applicable any longer because as the platform evolved so did the amount of new tutors and experts in these other areas so it was no longer just about photography. Although Karl is still the CEO and curates all the content the platform itself had to go with the times, equally every year their are new people that come into the Visual Arts and they have no idea who Karl was anyway so they will learn the brand Visual Education as they discover what we have to offer and hopefully they will remember that brand name and recommend it going forwards.
excellent! thank you! Now all I need is a half million dollar studio! LOL thanks again
Gray pavement is a good neutral, ground in general, and then you dial it down from there. That's how i learned it with film in the80ies. It would have worked in the shown shoot too to pick up exposure from the foreground (if one happens to be on an old camera with larger center metering). Concentrate less on exposure/technique and more on seeing things. Feel fast and shoot fast. "Focus" is all you need. Embrace imperfections like blown out hair as well as blur. Both work tremendously well when the shot itself works...
So, you don't use a flash meter? Then what is your camera setting, and the power output of the flashes?
The aperture setting is always decided in advance of anything so that we know what depth of field we require. For example that may be f11. The next setting is the shutter speed which is largely irrelevant when using studio flash because as long as it's fast enough to cut out any ambient light and sync with the flash then your'e fine so this is usually around 1/250th. ISO at defualt low one such as 100ISO. And then finally the only variable is what power you set the flash at and you just adjust the flash power up and down until it looks right in your results.
Based. Most will hate on this video, but in digital photography, it's mostly true. What is a much BETTER investment for digital photographers is a COLOUR METER!
This reminds me of studio work I did at a smaller scale awhile back. Glad you shared two courses recently. Especially how the model dresses and wear jewelry. Thanks for the refresher course.
Nonshade..but i was a member but the classes/ videos were dated... has newer material been added?
Hi, we add 2 to 3 new classes every month and new live workshops too. We have been producing some of the best educational content for 15 years and now have over 1000 classes covering, photography, lighting, filmmaking, CGI, Art, Makeup, Post Production and soon we're adding graphic design - hence our name 'visual education' as we focus soley on the visual arts. Always adding new classes, always adding the latest professional information and knowledge.
Thank you so much! I'm enjoying to watch your tutorial and I learned a lot. always looking forward to your new video.👍
i watched it when it was posted 10 years ago and still enjoy watching it as well as old videos of karl he’s changed unfortunately but i’ll always be grateful for what i learnt from him when he used to share and will always follow his success and be happy for him…i’m one of the proud owners of the DVDs he used to sell …instant classics 😊
I've been looking for light cones of this quality for years. Thank you. Just one question: when you want to photograph vertically, how do you hold the cone in place? I'm fighting hard but I can't find a practical, reliable solution.
What camera settings you using??
Much love sir
great job, but how many light gear u should have to get this results...thousands and thousands...not for beginners unfortunately😣
Hi, this can all be done with less expensive lights and softboxes. At the end of the day if you want to do any sport, hobby, craft you will need some tools to do it. Most people that want to get into studio photography invest in 2 or 3 lights at least and a lot of what we show on our channel can be achieved with that. Equally many people who don't have the same equipment still enjoy seeing how it is done and take inspiration from the techniques.
I used this for a product tutorial video that I made in Blender. I appreciate the information.
I am glad you have this refresher course. Just in case you have campaign coming up or Portfolio. Thanks.
I have seen photos from the old camera. Still looks good for small or medium business. This give me ideas for next personal project. Thanks.
After all the years I follow your YT channel as a subscriber, seen at least 95% of your videos, you are, BY FAR, my KING of lighting ! 👑 Thanks for all the good work over the years Karl.
Wow, thanks RS much appreciated.
Hi master karl. Why use a box like softbox instead of parabolic softbox?any advantage
Hi, see my two videos - one on actual parabolic lighting and one on the nonsense of parabolic softboxes.
„No one else is gonna tell me…“ 😂. That is just brilliant and definitely the right way to approach what YOU want 👍
Thanks! 😃
Thank you sir for your helpful tutorial
You are most welcome
"I'm telling you how I want that photo." Boom! Love it.
Exactly right Skydive! Thank you.
that's a great point and it's not something that's specifically mentioned much in many videos. your goal is decided by what you or what the client wants the image to be. sometimes I see flash tutorials and the end image is not what I would consider done, especially when there's hard shadows on a woman's face for example. it's good to know when the photographer is making clear that that's what they were aiming for not just what the result was for the video. cheers!
You are truly the master, you have proven time and again that knowledge trumps equipment, from another perspective, you can create magic with plethora of equipments and you also create outstanding images with minimal equipment. I salute sir !
You are very welcome. Thank you for your comment, it really helps both myself and the team 🙏
Thanks Karl you make it looks easy but doable for the less experienced photographer following your instruction’s
Great to hear John!
Your videos are excellent with a whole bunch of information. Am sure your Visual Education courses will be more than sufficient for prospective Fashion/Advertising photographers. Thank you Karl.👌👏
THanks for your comment- glad you enjoyed the video. Our platform certainly helps photographers achieve the results they're after
Beautiful pictures.
Thank you! Cheers!
Good refresher course. May do update of some photos of myself and other stuff. Thanks for the class.
Go for it! :)
Спасибо, что делитесь информацией. Очень полезное видео. Всегда интересно смотреть как работает мастер. Из России Вас тоже смотрят.
очень приятно за ваш комментарий, спасибо! :)
Well, a regular customer who knows nothing about photography would assume this is Photoshop.
Hi, can I ask what wattage led you're using with this?
Dude! If i was the Mfg. I would be pissed that you use such made up models to promote their products! Why so bizarre for a demo? Wow?
Hi, we're not sure we understand your message but we'd love to give you an answer if we can. What does Mfg mean? Who would be upset from the models wearing makeup? Unfortunately we're not quite clear on what is bizarre for this demo? If you could clarify your comments we'd be happy to respond thank you.
Sir, you removed the doubts from my mind once and for all regarding Led's v/s Flash. Thank you very much. 🙏
The design of the white top is awesome, jewelry, and tips gave me ideas. Good refresher course on jewelry model. Thanks.
Thanks for the training on Fashion, Portrait, and Product Photography. It good to learn something new or refresh memory of photography in case need it or enjoy doing it as a hobby.
You’re a great teacher ,brilliant information.
Your introduction desk setup of this video is pretty much the best example. :)
Thanks for explaining the lighting on the model wearing jewelry and why it dark. I will do some research on men jewelry to get ideas. Thanks for the video.
do what u want
I feel that Leica lenses are better built quality than XCD lenses
my question is, can you compensate for a smaller smartphone sensor by incresing exposure time and come up with the same image quality as of a bigger camera sensor?
Amazon needs cutout only for jewellery. I tried and it gives error says image has non white BG. Thanks for the trick anyway it is good.
